Canstruction® is a design/build competition for companies in the building industry to create structures using only canned food. This event raises awareness for hunger in the community and provides a collection for local food banks. The Atlanta CANstruction event supports the Atlanta Community Food Bank in its efforts to provide sustenance each week to over 80,000 people in Northwest Georgia who experience food insecurity.

More than 37,000,000 people (1 in 8 individuals) are receiving emergency food assistance from the Feeding America Network of more than 200 food banks.

Hunger can end. It all starts with one CAN

To unite with our local industry peers in the common goal of ending hunger, Newcomb & Boyd created a team to show their commitment to the fight.

1 in 6 Americans (50 million) has experienced food insecurity in the past 4 years.

From the Start

With a mission in mind – to provide 200 meals with 2,547 cans (1,880 lbs of food) – 17 team members set forth to create an exhibit that highlights imagination, evokes inspiration and sheds light on the need to help our community end hunger.

Through the support of the entire firm, the Newcomb & Boyd team constructed a lighthouse to be a beacon of hope for those in our community with food insecurity.

Schematics and concept development began in September. After a company vote, the winning idea was a lighthouse to serve as a beacon of hope for those in our community with food insecurity. Upon concept approval, a company-wide fundraiser raised the $3,500 required to purchase the cans and building material. Design development began, and the team selected cans for the exhibit considering color, design, and nutrition content. Today, construction documents have been created and the plan is in place. The culmination of months of hard work will be on display at Colony Square Mall where teams from Architecture, Engineering and Construction firms throughout Atlanta will compete for numerous awards.

48.4 million Americans are now living in poverty.
