What do you like most about Newcomb & Boyd?
The opportunity to work with so many people who are experts in their respective fields.

What drew you to Newcomb & Boyd originally? And how has Newcomb & Boyd changed since?
My introduction to Newcomb & Boyd was about twenty years ago, working as a mechanical contractor on a large, challenging project for the CDC which was being designed by Bob Howell and Greg Johnson.  Newcomb & Boyd has grown a lot since then, but the expertise remains.

What has been your favorite project at Newcomb & Boyd?
The University of Miami Transformational Cancer Research Building.  We’ve all lost someone we know to cancer and understand the importance of finding a cure.  Maybe the work done in this building will help in someday reaching that goal.

Most Unusual Job
I worked for a few years as a civil contractor designing mobile steam boiler trucks for a company that did cured-in-place pipe rehabilitation.

What three traits define you?
Diligent, self-disciplined, and enthusiastic

What would you do if you weren’t doing this?
I’d play centerfield for the Atlanta Braves.  No, seriously, I really like my profession and can’t imagine doing something different.

What do you like most about Newcomb & Boyd?
My favorite part of Newcomb & Boyd, what drew me here, and what has not changed while I have been here is the integrity of the firm and the empowerment of its employees.  The long history of high ethical standards in engineering and the fair treatment of its employees and clients exemplifies consistent, principled adherence to integrity and evokes a feeling of trust and confidence in our firm.

Where is your favorite place to be?
My favorite place to be is underwater doing the favorite thing I like to do, which is scuba diving.  From diving on an aircraft carrier in the Gulf of Mexico to diving with whale sharks off the Horn of Africa, I have had some great experiences and enjoyed the serenity of the underwater world.

How has Newcomb & Boyd helped you in your career development?
Newcomb & Boyd has constantly challenged me. I’ve worked on many different types of facilities, such as hospitals, military buildings, and airports. These each have their own unique criteria. Becoming an expert in all these types of projects has helped me grow in my career. I’ve also stepped into a project management role on a number of projects. This is the first company that I’ve been a project manager for, and I enjoy playing a pivotal role for the project success.

What drew you to Newcomb & Boyd originally? And how has Newcomb & Boyd changed since?
I was drawn to Newcomb & Boyd as a leader in the MEP market. We always push to learn new market trends rather than just reacting to what other competitors are doing. Since I’ve been at Newcomb & Boyd, this trend has continued and is one of the qualities that sets us apart.

Advice for a successful career in this industry?
Keep asking questions about things you don’t know about. Every day I find out about something new I didn’t know before. If you learn something new every day, you’ll have a wealth of knowledge as you progress through your career.

Where is the best place you’ve traveled to and why?
My wife and I have been on several trips to all-inclusive resorts in Mexico. There’s lots of options of activities to do. We’ve gone to visit Mayan ruins, snorkeling, and trips to lagoons. The days we’ve felt like laying low we hang out at the pools and just relax.

Favorite food?
Ice cream! Every day is a good day for ice cream.

If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be?
Teleportation. The possibility to go from one place to somewhere else in the world in a heartbeat sounds fantastic.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
When you find yourself in a difficult situation, try to remove yourself and your emotions from your decision. Think about what you would advise a friend to do if they were in this situation.

What’s your hidden talent?

How has Newcomb & Boyd helped you in your career development?
Newcomb & Boyd has provided me with a path to learn my discipline and take on progressively more important roles in leading design and project management. I think that the progression in leading design has allowed me to solidify my understanding of HVAC both in terms of design and constructability. Newcomb & Boyd has given me the opportunity to work on top caliber projects and with top caliber clients and teams. Working with remarkable architects and general contractors has allowed me to collaborate with and learn from the other experts in our industry. This combination of experiences has proven invaluable in producing good quality work and successful projects.

What has been your favorite project at Newcomb & Boyd?
My favorite project so far has been the Fred D Thompson Courthouse and Federal Building. This project was the first large scale project for which I had a prominent role. The nature of the project made it particularly interesting and challenging since it involves many different stakeholders and a diverse range of requirements. Being a courthouse, this building also serves as a project I can take pride in not just for completing the project but also for the significance the building will have in the city of Nashville for decades to come.

Advice for a successful career in this industry?
I have found that taking pride in what you do and developing your expertise has been the biggest guiding principle in having a successful career. Taking pride in what I do facilitated producing quality final products and feeling satisfied in what I created. Developing expertise on topics may sound like a daunting task but can be a rewarding and fulfilling goal. A lot of the expertise I gained is through working with others both within the firm and externally and thus collaborative in nature. I think having these types of interactions lead to faster development all while building relationships.

Where is the best place you’ve traveled to and why?
The best place I’ve traveled to is Glacier National Park. This was the first major national park that I’ve been to and left a lasting impression on me. I was able to encounter a pristine beauty unlike anything I had experienced before. The mountain scenery and color wildflowers along mountain hiking trails left an image in my head that I can always go back to and find tranquility.

Favorite food?
One of my favorite foods is Iskander Kebab. It combines delicious doner kebab meat with a buttery tomato sauce for a delectable flavor.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
The number of questions to aim for in a day is 20 minus the number of years of experience you have. This is both a loose quote and piece of advice I was given early on in my career at Newcomb & Boyd. Part of the idea is simple in that it is good to ask questions. But there is a deeper insight in this concept that I value. There is always opportunity to grow and improve. You may be inexperienced or lack knowledge now but that doesn’t preclude you from learning and improving. If you put effort into something you can learn and develop. A partner of a firm isn’t made in a day but over years of asking questions and improving. Likewise, a craftsman or hobby isn’t made in a day but over time by refining and developing their skill.
